- ItemHope and psychological resilience in primary caregivers of patients with a chronic mental illness followed in a community mental health center(Elsevier, 2024-03) Erkuş, Şeyma; Babacan Gümüş, Aysun; 372023Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine hope and psychological resilience in primary caregivers of patients with a chronic mental illness. Design and methods: The descriptive study was conducted on 297 caregivers in community mental health centers in Turkey. Data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, Dispositional Hope Scale and the Resilience Scale for Adults. Findings: Hope and psychological resilience of primary caregivers of patients with a chronic mental illness were moderate. To sociodemographic and caregiver characteristics; caregivers who are over 40 years old, lost his/her spouse, low education level, housewife or retired, unemployed, who evaluated their incomes low, mother, living in the same house with the patient, caring for ten years or more, caring for another patient and not getting help in care had lower hope and resilience levels. Compared to patients with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, caregivers of patients with schizophrenia had lower hope and psychological resilience levels. Conclusions: Primary caregivers of patients with a chronic mental illness should be supported in terms of hope and psychological resilience.
- ItemIntercultural perspective on happiness in international female university students: a qualitative study(Taylor and Francis, 2025-12) Babaoğlu, Elçin; Erkuş, Şeyma; 372023Purpose The number of international students is gradually increasing, and the lack of adaptability they experience affect their happiness. This study aimed to examine the happiness of international undergraduate students using a qualitative method. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 international undergraduate students studying at the university. Results The themes identified as a result of the content analysis were as follows: components of happiness, the meaning of being a happy university student in another country, and the meaning of unhappiness. Discussion Students' perspectives on happiness vary according to collectivist and individualist social characteristics. The most important sources of support for students are friends from societies similar to their own cultures. Students from collectivist societies are more reserved and, therefore, unhappy academically and socially. Mental health professionals serving university students and other professionals working in this field need to plan therapeutic interventions to increase the well-being of international students, taking into account risk factors.
- ItemPrevention of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Intensive Care Units: The Effect of Scenario-Based Simulation on Nursing Students' Skill Development Process(Wiley, 2026-06) Topbaş, Eylem; Sarmasoğlu Kılıkçıer, Şenay; Tunçbilek, Zahide; 167438Background: Nursing students need to be equipped with effective clinical skills to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in high-risk patients in intensive care units. Aim: The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of scenario-based simulation training in developing knowledge and skills for the prevention of VAP in undergraduate nursing students. Study Design: A single-group, pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted with undergraduate nursing students enrolled in an intensive care course. Scenario-based simulations and a VAP Prevention Performance Checklist were prepared for the study. The students' skill performance was assessed simultaneously by two independent observers before and after the simulation training. Pretest and posttest scores were compared with Wilcoxon, McNemar and McNemar-Bowker tests, and interrater agreement was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Results: In total, 36 students participated in the study. The content validity of the VAP Prevention Performance Checklist was assessed using the Delphi method, which resulted in expert consensus for all items in the second round (the scale-level content validity index was 1.00). There was excellent interrater agreement in the skill performance assessment (ICC = 0.982; p < 0.001). The students' VAP prevention performance scores were significantly higher in the posttest than in the pretest (38.38 +/- 7.81 vs. 18.38 +/- 5.06, p = 0.002, Cohen's d = 1.25). Conclusions: Scenario-based simulation training was shown to be effective in increasing nursing students' awareness and implementation of skills that contribute to the prevention of VAP. Scenario-based simulations can be used as an effective method to improve VAP prevention knowledge and skills during undergraduate nursing education and in-service training. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Scenario-based simulations can be used as an effective method to improve VAP prevention knowledge and skills during undergraduate nursing education and in-service training.
