Abstract
This article analyses the fundamental reasons for Hungary’s disagreements with Euro-Atlantic structures. The article questions the mainstream view that Hungary’s transformation into an ‘electoral autocracy’ has caused conflicts between Hungary and Euro-Atlantic institutions by constituting a contrast with Euro-Atlantic values. It is argued that Hungarian foreign policy has historically exhibited a balancing tradition that has become the dominant approach under Viktor Orbán towards Euro-Atlantic structures, combined with the weaknesses of Hungary’s Westernisation. The article demonstrates that this approach has added a confrontational element to the relationship between Hungary and Euro-Atlantic powers.
