- PublicationDeconstructing the language laws: Arundhati Roy’s linguistic strategies in The God of small things(Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi, 2023) Koç, Nesrin; Koç, NesrinArundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things (1997) is a story which portrays how things deemed to be the smallest are connected to, shaped, and constructed by the bigger discourses of history, colonialism, gender, caste, and religion which define the subject. With her linguistic strategies aiming at deconstruction of the language, Roy unveils how the voice of the subaltern is located on the margins of the dominant discourses, and therefore, listening to the subaltern’s voice requires dwelling on the alternative spaces of existence constructed by the subaltern. Estha’s refusal to speak, Ammu, Velutha and Rahel’s resistance to the laws that determine interpersonal relations and their use of the language of the body are among the significant examples of the mechanisms used by the subaltern to resist domination. By exploring Roy’s linguistic strategies through close reading and textual analysis of the silences and alternative linguistic positions of the postcolonial subject, who is further marginalised by gender, caste and religion, from a position that combines postcolonial theory with a Lacanian perspective, this study aims to highlight how Roy creates a unique linguistic expression through the subversive strategies she utilizes to disrupt hegemonic power structures and challenge the established norms of society, culture and language. Designing, constructing, deconstructing and reconstructing, as in the architectural profession in which she was trained, Roy transforms standard English into an effective tool of communicating the postcolonial subject’s experiences of subalternity.
- PublicationEnhancing reading strategies through literature selection in EFL classrooms(CV. Yudhistt Fateeh, 2024-04) Durak, Ayşegül; Yavuz, Fatih; 392831; 131069This study presents a detailed examination of how to enhance reading strategies with selected literary genres using the library research method. In addition to library resources, the information collection process has been monitored through various academic publications, articles and books, the data obtained has been analysed and the results have been evaluated. Discovering the efficacy of authentic texts demonstrates that it enhances reading comprehension and fosters the abilities of learners. The study also identifies key strategies such as skimming, scanning, guessing, and distinguishing implied and literal meaning strategies. These techniques play a significant role in learners’ capability of understanding authentic text. Drawing on theoretical frameworks, the study underscores the importance of integrating the strategies mentioned above into teaching reading to enrich deeper understanding and critical engagement with literature. As a result, using the selected strategies and literary sources can effectively equip EFL learners to understand the unknown parts of complex texts. Language acquisition and proficiency improvement in authentic text are facilitated by navigating.
- PublicationInvestigation of the effects of computer-aided animations on conceptual understanding through metaphors: An example of artificial intelligence(ICETOL, 2022) Aydın, Sevim; Duman, Emel; Bertiz, Yasemin; Birişçi, Salih; 385249In this study, it was aimed to investigate the change in the conceptual understanding of "artificial intelligence". For this purpose, the determination of the metaphors related to the concept of artificial intelligence in the stages before and after watching the artificial intelligence-themed computer-aided animation developed within the scope of the study, and the assessment of change between them constituted the research problem. During the 2021-2022 academic year 39 Information Technologies (IT) teachers and 103 fifth grade students studying in a secondary school in Nilüfer District of Bursa participated in this study. A phenomenological design pattern was adopted throughout the research. In the first stage of the study, many concepts were revealed as a result of the questionnaire applied to determine the concepts that were difficult to teach by IT teachers, and among them the concept of "artificial intelligence" was determined. In the second stage of the study, students were asked to complete the statement "Artificial intelligence is like … because ..." to determine the metaphorical perceptions on the concept of artificial intelligence. Based on the themes obtained from the metaphor results, computer-aided animation on the concept of artificial intelligence was developed by the researchers. After the animation demonstration to students, the metaphorical data collection process was repeated and it was attempted to determine the change in the students' understanding of the concept of artificial intelligence. As a result of the study, although the conceptual categories regarding artificial intelligence generally had similar characteristics, it was observed that the justifications in the post-animation conceptual perceptions were more meaningful.
