Abstract
Introduction: Although there have been great developments in organ transplantation, the number of organ donations has yet to reach the desired level worldwide for many years. The knowledge and attitudes of nursing students, who are future health professionals, are important in increasing the awareness of patients and their relatives about organ donation. Objective: This study aimed to determine the knowledge and attitudes of nursing students about organ donation and transplantation. Materials and Method: This descriptive study was conducted on 257 nursing students. The data were collected using the "Behaviour and Attitude Determination Form for Organ Donation" and "Organ-Tissue Donation and Transplantation Knowledge Scale" prepared by the researchers. Frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, and Tukey test were used to evaluate the data. Results: 84.4% of the students wanted to donate organs. The majority of the students stated that they thought that society was not sufficiently informed about organ donation, 60.3% did not believe that the rights of organ donors were strictly protected by law in our country, and only 24% stated that they had received information during school education. 84.8% of the students indicated they did not want to donate their organs to someone of the opposite sex. The mean score of the "Organ-Tissue Transplantation and Transplantation Knowledge Scale" was 12.9±2.4, the mean score of the "Donor characteristics" sub-dimension was 3.5±0.9, and the mean score of "Legal, ethical and medical process related to organ donation" sub-dimension was 9.4±1.9. The total scale score of the students who wanted to donate organs and those who wanted to donate organs were significantly higher (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the study, the student's knowledge level affected their willingness to donate organs. Organ donation should be supported by increasing the level of knowledge of nursing students on this subject.
